It has been four years since Kurt adjudicated the Ipswich Drama Festival and he is looking forward to the challenges that the 2010 Festival will hold. Kurt has lived in Brisbane, since 1971. He received a Master of Letters in Drama from the University of New England . His first love is theatre, and he is well-known throughout Southeast Queensland as an actor, director, adjudicator, and teacher.
Kurt brings to his responsibilities as an adjudicator a background in English Literature and Drama studies together with extensive theatrical experience in acting, directing and adjudicating.
Born 21st November 1940 in New Rochelle, New York, Kurt’s early experience was in his native New York having first stepped on stage at the age of nine to play Jim in Treasure Island for the Becket Players in Becket Massachusetts.
Kurt was an active member for three years of the Pennsylvania Players in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania alongside Hal Prince, legendary New York theatre producer and director. Starting as a hoofer, fond memories include tours of Guys and Dolls, Kismet, and finally lead male dancer in Once Upon A Mattress. Since coming to Australia in 1971, he has been deeply involved in Community Theatre throughout South East Queensland. Along with Dina Heslop, Jason Ingram Roth, John and Sue Stibbard, Graham McKenzie and Val Farmer, Kurt was a founding member of the Australia Community Theatre. Funded by the Queensland Government, this group toured seven plays in six years throughout Southeast Queensland . His enthusiasm and commitment have earned him great respect in the non- professional theatre movement in this area. Kurt has recently been made a Life Member of the Gold Coast Little Theatre, Southport , where he was Artistic Director for several years. Kurt also just completed a two-year stint as the Artistic Director for Brisbane Arts Theatre.
Kurt has acted in and directed numerous plays from the classics to the most modern. Two of his favorite roles are the Stage Manager in 'Our Town' and Lenny Ganz in Neil Simon’s 'Rumors'. Lenny Ganz is the only role that Kurt has created four times. Kurt recently appeared as Sir Henry Angkatell in Eric Hauff’s production of Agatha Christie’s The Hollow. Kurt has conducted Master Classes in Acting and Directing for the The Mousetrap Theate, Gold Coast Little Theatre, the Ipswich City Council, The Association of Community Theatres and the Wyong Theatre Group.
Kurt has always been a great advocate of the one act play Festival Circuit, seeing it as an invaluable means of keeping community theatre alive. Kurt feels that festivals are a wonderful way for people with an interest in theatre to meet, share ideas and develop their craft. Kurt has adjudicated for Brisbane Arts Theatre, the Murrumba Theatre Festival sponsored by the Mousetrap Theatre, Redcliffe, the Ipswich Little Theatre Festival and the Trans Tasman Drama Festival – Norfolk Island , Act 1 – Strathpine and the Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival. Kurt will be adjudicating the Trans Tasman Festival again in 2011. Kurt also hopes to direct for the Moustrap Theatre and Centenary Players in 2011.
What is a One Act Play Festival? – each year, across South East Queensland there is a flurry of thespian activity as small and large theatre groups select a one act play, audition and cast the required actors and rehearse intently to create the very best possible production of that play.
While this is happening, entry forms are completed and sent off to the various theatre groups who host a weekend One Act Play Festival and then the fun begins. Each Festival has an average of 15 – 20 plays entered in either Intermediate or Open (Senior) categories and there is a wide range of awards available to be won. Each Festival chooses an Adjudicator to make the decisions and the final Awards session is always a highly emotional event. Festivals are held as far west as Dalby, south to Beenleigh and north to Sunshine Coast (Buderim) and the season runs from June to September. Some plays are entered into all the Festivals, some to only one or two, but regardless of the number, all involved speak of the fun, friendliness and rewards that are gained.
We are proud that our Festival has the reputation of being one of the friendliest and best organised Festivals in the South East Queensland Festival circuit and we would love your theatre group to submit a play this year.
If your theatre group is interested in entering our exciting Festival, please contact the Festival Director, Suzanne Matulich on 3281 4748 or suzanne@matulich.org to be put on the database.
The Ipswich Little Theatre One Act Play Festival continues to be the longest running festival of its type in Australia and no one has yet disputed that claim.
Do be a part of all the fun and competition next year – you will be warmly welcomed.
